Emergency Lighting

Emergency Lighting: What is it and why does my business need it?

When the power is down, emergency lighting provides light – the concept is simple, but the process of designing, installing, and maintaining your emergency lighting installation can be complicated.

The “power down” situation can be because of a fire or power cut, either way the threat of sudden darkness can be chaotic and pose a RISK to human safety. Emergency lighting reduces the RISK to those inside the building.

Your emergency lighting installation must be fully automatic and give sufficient illumination for a safe exit.

A higher standard will be required for the areas where machinery is located so that an operator can terminate a potentially dangerous process or carry out a proper shut-down procedure before evacuation.

Martin Williams - Managing Director

As designers and installers of emergency lighting systems we have clear guidelines to work to in the form of BS 5266-1: 2011, these standards along with our experience enables us to provide emergency lighting installations to a vast number of premises.

The British standards are the minimum required but it is important to note that a higher standard will be required for the areas where machinery is located so that an operator can terminate a potentially dangerous process or carry out a proper shut-down procedure before evacuating the premises.

All of our emergency lighting installations come with a digital emergency lighting log book. This is to ensure full compliance as when the Health and Safety individual within a business leaves the log book can often be misplaced.

For more guidance, please see the emergency lighting section within the lighting at work publication provided by the Health and Safety Executive
